On Monday, the winners of the 2023 premier athletics awards were revealed in Monaco. This year, the award was divided into three event categories: track, field, and out-of-stadia categories.
Kenya's long- and middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon, marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum, and Ethiopia's marathon female record holder Tigist Assefa were all named among the World Athletes of the Year on Monday after the awards were expanded into three categories, according to a press release from the International Association of Athletics Federations, World Athletics.
Alongside these athletes, the United States track and field sprinter Noah Lyles, Swedish-American pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis, and the Venezuelan world record holder for women's triple jump Yulimar Rojas, also received the award, the association noted.
According to the World Athletics, Kipyegon was chosen as the best in the women's track category, Rojas in the women's field, and Assefa in the women's out-of-stadia category. In the men's categories, Lyles was crowned the best track athlete, Duplantis became the field athlete of the year, and Kiptum won the award in the men's out-of-stadia category.
The athletes' "outstanding performance" was praised by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who also congratulated the winners.

"The depth of talent and the outstanding performances in our sport this year more than justify the expansion of the World Athletics Awards to recognize the accomplishments by these six athletes across a range of disciplines. Our World Athletes of the Year alone have achieved seven world records between them in 2023, as well as a host of world titles and major wins, so it is only fitting that they be recognized as the athletes of the year in their respective fields," Coe said, adding: "I congratulate our award winners and all the athletes nominated for these honors."

Kipyegon broke three world records at distances of 1,500 m, the mile (1609.3 m), and 5,000 m, and won two gold medals at the World Athletics Championships for 1,500 m and 5,000 m. Kiptum set a world record in the Chicago Marathon, becoming the first person in human history to run the 26.2-mile distance in under 2 hours and 1 minute. Assefa is renowned for her record-breaking performance at the September 2023 BMW Berlin Marathon, crossing the finish line in two hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds.
After receiving the award, Kipyegon expressed her pride, stating, "To achieve what I achieved this year was magnificent. It was a dream come true," the association quoted her on social networks.
"First of all I am very grateful to my fans. I’m really grateful for being awarded this trophy, thank you," Kiptum was cited by the World Athletics as saying after winning the award.
Additionally, the association named the Kenyan 19-year-old athletes Faith Cherotich and Emmanuel Wanyonyi as the Rising Stars of 2023, according to the press release.
