Bahrain Recalls Ambassador, Cuts Economic Ties With Israel, Bahrain's Parliament Says
13:23 02.11.2023 (Updated: 13:47 02.11.2023) Since the escalation between Israel and Palestine in early October, Chile, Colombia and Jordan have recalled their ambassadors from Israel, and Bolivia has severed diplomatic relations with the Jewish state.
Bahrain has recalled its ambassador from Israel, the Israeli ambassador has also left Manama, and economic ties have been cut, Bahrain's parliament said on its website.
"The Council of Representatives [lower house of the Bahraini parliament] confirms that the Israeli ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain has left Bahrain, and the Kingdom of Bahrain has decided to return the Bahraini ambassador from Israel to the country. Economic relations with Israel have also been severed," the statement said.
The Council stated that these steps come as "a confirmation of Bahraini’s established historical position in support of the
Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people, which the King announced in all conferences and events."
The lower house also affirmed that "the continuation of the war and military operations, and the continuing Israeli escalation in light of the lack of respect for international humanitarian law, prompts the Council to demand more decisions and measures that preserve the lives and souls of innocent people and civilians in Gaza and all Palestinian areas."
Bahrain established diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020 as part of the US-initiated Abrahamic Accords to build relations between countries in the Arab world and Israel.
On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip and breached the border,
killing and abducting people in neighboring Israeli communities. Israel launched retaliatory strikes and ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food, and fuel.
According to the latest figures from the Gaza Health Ministry, the death toll from Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip has reached 9,061. In Israel, more than 1,300 people have died, according to local authorities.
