On October 7, Palestine's Hamas militants launched an offensive in southern Israel, with the Jewish state responding by starting a wide-scale military operation against the Gaza-based militants.
The latest escalation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, so far, led to thousands of deaths and thousands of injuries on both the Palestinian and Israeli sides. The UN Security Concil has so far failed to adopt a resolution on the possible reaction to the targic developments.
The conflict may escalate into a region-wide one, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday.
"We are observing attempts to blame everything on Iran and we consider them quite provocative. The Iranian leadership, I believe, takes a fairly responsible, balanced position and is calling for preventing this conflict from spreading to the entire region and neighboring countries," Lavrov said.

Israeli Soldiers Will Soon Enter Gaza, Defense Minister Reportedly Says
CAIRO (Sputnik) - The commander of the Palestinian National Security Forces, Jehad Mheisen, has been killed by an Israeli airstrike, Palestinian Interior Ministry spokesman Eyad al-Bosom said on Thursday.
"We mourn the death of Jehad Mheisen, the commander of the Gaza Strip National Security Forces," the spokesman said during his speech broadcast by Arab television channels.
The spokesman added that the attacks had been carried out on the houses where the commanders lived. Mheisen was killed along with his family members. Fouad Abu Btihan, the head of border crossings in the Gaza Strip, also died in the attacks.

Egypt Invites Members of UN Security Council to Summit on Palestine: Ambassador
ROME (Sputnik) - Members of the UN Security Council, together with the leaders of Turkey, Germany, Italy and the European Union, have been invited to the summit on Palestine, which will be held in Cairo on October 21, Egyptian Ambassador to Italy Bassam Rady said on Thursday.
"We have received certain confirmation from Italy that Prime Minister [Giorgia] Meloni will take part [in the summit] together with other foreign leaders, including the Permanent Five [the permanent members of the UN Security Council] plus Turkey, Spain, Germany and EU leaders. Of course, all Arab countries have been invited as well," Rady told reporters in Rome.
The Egyptian diplomat also expressed his hope that at the summit, resolutions would be adopted to ensure peace and security in the region.

US Navy Says Sent Another Military Ship From Italy to Eastern Mediterranean
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States has deployed another navy ship from its homeport in the central Italian coastal city of Gaeta to support US operations in the eastern Mediterranean Sea amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, the US Sixth Fleet said.
"The U.S. 6th Fleet Blue Ridge-class command and control ship USS MOUNT WHITNEY LCC 20 departed Gaeta, Italy, Oct. 18, 2023, in support of U.S. operations in the eastern Mediterranean Sea," the statement said on Wednesday.
The amphibious command ship would be dispatched to the US European Command area to engage with allies and partners and support maritime operations there, the statement added.

Israel's Ex-Defense Minister Says War With Hamas Could Last for Months
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Israel’s ex-defense minister and chairman of the Israeli National Unity opposition party, Benny Gantz, said he believes the war with Palestinian movement Hamas could last for months and expand into the northern front.
"It will take a long time. The war in the south — and if need be also in the north or anywhere else — might take months, and the rebuilding will take years. Only when [the rebuilding] is complete will we be victorious," Gantz was quoted as saying by The Times of Israel newspaper on Wednesday.
He spoke at the funeral of Ofir Libstein, the head of Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council, who was killed fighting Hamas during their cross-border assault in early October.
Gantz added that the goal of the war "is not just to defeat Hamas, but to promise that the south will be 100% paradise."

BEIJING (Sputnik) - China is disappointed that the United States prevented the UN Security Council from adopting the draft resolution on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Thursday.
On Monday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt the Russia-drafted Israel-Gaza resolution, as the document did not receive the required nine votes. Five countries voted for the document, four were against, six abstained.
"China is deeply disappointed that the United States prevented the UN Security Council from adopting a draft resolution on Palestine," the diplomat told reporters.
