MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On October 7, Palestinian group Hamas launched a rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip; as a response, Israel declared a state of war the following day and launched retaliatory strikes. Later, Israel ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel.
No US administration has ever been interested in finding a final settlement in the Middle East, an unstable situation in the region has proved to be very useful to the US, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said.
"First of all, an unstable explosive region [Middle East], packed with a variety of weapons, turned out to be very useful to the United States. If there is a problem — the services of the US are needed... Controlled instability that brings influence and big money," Medvedev said in an article for the Izvestia newspaper.
Washington has never been interested in finding a durable solution to the situation in the Middle East, the official said.
"It was necessary to put an end to the most important peace initiatives and clear achievements, which is quite consistent with Washington's policy. After all, no US administration has ever been interested in a final settlement on the Middle East track," Medvedev stated.
According to him, the world community should focus on resuming the settlement process in the Middle East, this is a very difficult task, and it is obvious that this mission is impossible at the moment.
"It does not matter at all who is saying what now. What matters is what they do. For the world community and international organizations, the main thing today is to contribute to the resumption of the settlement process in the Middle East. The mission is the very difficult. Almost hopeless. At the moment, it is obvious that this mission is impossible," Medvedev added.
The latest escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which began on October 7, so far, led to thousands of deaths and injuries on both the Palestinian and Israeli sides. Later on Tuesday, a strike on a hospital in Gaza resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian civilians.
