It is necessary not only to urgently stop the bloodshed between the Israeli and Palestinian parties to the conflict, but also to begin searching for a peaceful solution to the situation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.
The Russian top diplomat also stressed the need to pay special attention to the root causes of the conflict.
"And it is necessary not only to urgently stop the fighting, to solve the problem with civilians, who, in huge numbers, are becoming victims of the current situation, but also to pay special attention to the reasons why the Palestinian problem has not been able to find a solution for many decades, although there are direct, clear, unambiguous decisions of the UN Security Council," Lavrov said.
Lavrov's comments were made during talks with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Moscow in the wake of the current escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The Russian minister added that Moscow and the League of Arab States need to contribute to solving issues between Israel and Palestine and ending hostility there.
"I am confident that Russia and the League of Arab States, all members of this organization, can and must contribute to solving problems, first of all, stopping the bloodshed, ending the suffering of civilians," Lavrov said at the meeting with LAS Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
The Russian minister highlighted that Moscow is "ready" to contribute to the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
"We are ready to do this together with you, together with all other countries that are sincerely interested in establishing sustainable peace in the Middle East and in ensuring the security of all countries in the region without exception, including the State of Palestine, the creation of which is required by the [United Nations] Security Council decision I mentioned," Lavrov added.
The Arab League secretary general, in turn, agreed with Lavrov there is a need to end hostilities in Palestine and Israel. He also called for creating political perspectives for conflict resolution between Israel and Palestine.
"We do not support this violence. We completely reject violence, but from both sides. We demand the creation of political prospects and a just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict," Aboul Gheit said.
On Saturday morning, Israel was hit by an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army press office said that more than 3,000 rockets were launched. In addition, dozens of Hamas fighters infiltrated border areas in southern Israel.
The military wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement on Saturday announced Operation "Al-Aqsa Flood" against Israel. The Israel Defense Forces announced the launch of Operation Iron Swords against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the country was at war and said he had ordered a widespread mobilization of reserves.
The al-Qassam Brigades (the military wing of Hamas) said they had captured dozens of Israeli soldiers and officers.
