Before dawn on Wednesday, a group of senior military officers in Gabon announced the cancellation of recent election results and the dissolution of state institutions, bringing an end to the 56-year rule of the Bongo family over Gabon.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) announced that it will hold an extraordinary session next Monday amid a military takeover in Gabon.

"The conference decided to hold its next extraordinary session in person in Djibloho, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, on September 4, 2023," the ECCAS said in a communique following its third extraordinary session on the situation in Gabon.

Central African Republic (CAR) President Faustin-Archange Touadera has been appointed to mediate negotiations with the conflicting parties in Gabon to restore constitutional order in the country, according to the communique.

Gabon's Military Leader Vows More Democracy After Coup
On Wednesday, ousted Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba was reelected as the country's head for a third term. The Gabonese military later delivered a televised address, declaring the election results canceled and all institutions dissolved.
The president has since been placed under house arrest, while his son has been detained, media reported.
