Gabonese Rebel Leader to Be Sworn In as Interim President on Monday

In power for 14 years, Ali Bongo Ondimba has been announced winner of the 2023 presidential elections with 64.27% of the votes cast. Later on Wednesday, a group of a Gabonese military announced the cancellation of the elections' results and the dissolution of "all the institutions of the Republic".
Brice Oligui Nguema, the leader of rebels in Gabon, will be sworn in as an interim president before the constitutional court on Monday, a spokesman of rebels said on Thursday.
"The transitional president will take the oath before the constitutional court on Monday, September 4, 2023 at the presidential administration," the spokesman said on air of a local broadcaster.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba was reelected as the country's head for a third term after securing 64.2% of the vote. Following the election body's announcement, the Gabonese military delivered a televised address, declaring that the election results were canceled and all institutions were dissolved, AFP reported. The president has since been placed under house arrest, while his son has been detained.
