The Atlas Lions, as the Moroccan team is called, became the fourth champion of the tournament since its inception in 2011. Previous Cup winners were Egypt, Nigeria and Gabon.
Morocco was crowned U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title winners, beating Egypt in the final at home in Rabat.
The match kicked off with an opener from Egyptian Mahmoud Hassan in the tenth minute of the game.
Eight minutes later, however, Hassan was shown a red card for a rough tackle, leaving his team to play the rest of the game at half-time.
The Moroccans responded to that goal with a shot by Yanis Begraoui in the 37th minute.
The game was settled in extra time. At the 105+3 minute mark, former Marseille midfielder Oussama Targhalline, now playing for Le Havre, scored the game-winning goal.
The captain of the Moroccan team, Abdessamad Ez Zalzouli was crowned the tournament’s top scorer, while Egypt’s goalkeeper, Hamza Alaa, won the prize for best goalkeeper.
Mali took home the bronze in the African Cup of Nations U23 the day before. Together with Morocco and Egypt, it qualified for the 2024 Olympics.
Guinea, which lost to Mali in the contest for the bronze medal, can still secure a place as the fourth African team at the Olympic Games in Paris, but they have to win a playoff against a yet-to-be-decided Asian opponent.
Last year, Morocco's first team finished fourth at the World Cup in Qatar.
