Future of Nigeria's Football Coach in Fans' Hands
18:29 24.06.2023 (Updated: 18:30 24.06.2023) Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro took charge of the Nigerian national soccer team, which includes some star players from European championships, last May. The coach's contract runs until the end of June.
Nigeria's football federation will let fans decide whether coach Jose Peseiro remains at the helm of the national team, the president of the football organization Ibrahim Gusau has said.
"We have the plan to push the votes to Nigerians to hear their views and thoughts," the head of the federation said on the radio show.
Gusau stressed that the federation had tried both foreign and local coaches, and added that "maybe we didn't get it right in the area of getting the right person."
Under Peseiro, the Nigerian national team failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but
managed to reach the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast.
Since the appointment of the Portuguese coach, the Nigerian team has won four matches and lost three.
Before Nigeria, Peseiro led the Venezuelan national team, the only South American team that has never advanced to the World Cup finals.
Peseiro previously coached at club level, winning the 2006/07 season with Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal and
reaching the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) final with Sporting Lisbon in 2004/05, losing 3-1 to CSKA Moscow.
The brightest star of the Nigerian national team is believed to be Victor Osimhen, who took the Italian championship with Napoli this year. For these achievements, the striker received the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in May.
