Earlier, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and Prosecutor General's Office have launched a criminal case against Wagner Group head Yevgeny Prigozhin for attempting to incite an armed uprising.

The FSB said that there was a threat of escalation on Russian territory. The Russian Defense Ministry said that social media reports about alleged Russian military strikes on camps belonging to PMC Wagner were not true.

Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov has made a report to Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning Prigozhin's case, according to the Kremlin.

Security has been boosted in several regions of Russia, as well as the capital of Moscow, on Saturday morning.

On Saturday, Vladimir Putin delivered an address to Russian citizens, personnel of the Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies and special services against the background of a mutiny attempt by Wagner group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. The Russian leader deemed the mutiny attempt 'treason' and noted that all those responsible for it will face inevitable punishment.

"Taking into account their high readiness, professional coherence of actions, high-quality control of the movement of troops, we can talk about the presence of a well-thought-out military plan and the participation in the rebellion of those who previously served in the elite units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and quite likely, foreign specialists," said Dmitry Medvedev, deputy-head of Russia's Security Council.

He stated that the development of events shows that the actions of the persons who organized the military rebellion fully fit into the scheme of a staged coup d'etat.

Medvedev, who is also Russia's ex-president, called the current armed rebellion a well-thought-out and planned operation, the purpose of which is to seize power in the country.

"We understand the consequences of a coup in the largest nuclear power. There has never been such a situation in the history of mankind, when the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons was run by bandits. Of course, such a crisis would not be limited to a single country. The world will be brought to the brink of destruction," he told reporters.

He added that Russia would not allow events to follow such a scenario.
