Ghana's President-elect John Dramani Mahama appointed speaker of the parliament ahead of Tuesday's inauguration, the office of the incoming leader said in a statement on Sunday.

"The president-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has in consultation with the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), mandated the nomination of […] Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as speaker of the 9th parliament of the fourth republic," the statement read.

Mahama emphasized Bagbin's considerable experience, saying it would strengthen the parliament's ability to effectively oversee and drive Ghana's democratic and legislative development.
Bagbin, who will serve his second term as speaker from 2021, is a member of the ruling NDC party, which won 183 seats in the 276-member parliament in the elections held on December 7, 2024.
The appointed speaker expressed his gratitude and pledged to uphold the principles of justice, fairness and respect for the rule of law during his second term.

"I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead of the country, working to strengthen our democratic institutions and to ensure that parliament remains an effective and responsive institution to the needs and hopes of the people," he said in a statement.
