Russia considers the UN Security Council's response to the situation in Lebanon to be insufficient and detached from the realities "on the ground" because of US efforts to politically "cover up" Israel, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"The paralysis of the main body for maintaining international peace and security against the background of an unprecedented explosion in the Middle East undoubtedly undermines the authority of the Security Council," the statement said.
Moscow also expresses its full support to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and will continue its active efforts in the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly to ensure compliance with the resolutions.
Earlier, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stated that an Israeli tank attacked the UN peacekeepers' stronghold in the village of Kfar Kela in the southern part of the Arab state.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz later said in an interview with the Welt newspaper that the shelling of the positions of UNIFIL was a "mistake," and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the country's Foreign Ministry are negotiating to prevent similar incidents.
