Israeli Tank Attack Peacekeepers' Stronghold in Southern Lebanon, UN Says
13:09 17.10.2024 (Updated: 13:46 17.10.2024) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Israeli forces are conducting an operation against Hezbollah movement in the south of Lebanon, which has been attacking the Israeli border in support of the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip. Israeli shelling of the Lebanese settlements has led to casualties among the civilian population and mass displacement of residents.
An Israeli tank attacked the UN peacekeepers' stronghold in the village of Kfar Kela in southern Lebanon, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said in a statement.
"Peacekeepers at a position near Kafer Kela observed an IDF Merkava tank firing at their watchtower. Two cameras were destroyed, and the tower was damaged. Yet again, we see direct and apparently deliberate fire on a UNIFIL position," the statement said.
Earlier, the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund's (UNICEF) reported that at least 360,000 Lebanese citizens have no access to
fresh water due to damage to water supply facilities caused by Israeli bombardment. The organization added that at least 15 hospitals and 70 primary health care centers have also been damaged in different regions of the country.
On Monday, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said that the Permanent Mission of Lebanon to the UN had filed a complaint with
the UN Security Council regarding ongoing Israeli strikes on civilian infrastructure facilities.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said at the end of September that nearly 1 million people have been internally
displaced in Lebanon amid Israeli attacks. More than 1,500 people died, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
