Five Kenyan police officers appeared in court on Wednesday, suspected of aiding Collins Jumaisi, a man accused of murdering and dismembering dozens of women, to escape from a police cell in Nairobi on Tuesday, along with 12 Eritrean illegal migrants.
Prosecutors are reportedly seeking a 14-day detention order for the five officers, which includes one woman, to enable the completion of investigations. They were among eight officers arrested over the escape, though it is not clear if the other three will also face court proceedings.
State prosecutor James Gachoka mentioned that several accomplices remain at large but provided no further details, reports read.
The court is expected to rule on the custody request on Thursday.
In mid-July, the Kenyan police found mutilated and dismembered bodies disposed of in plastic bags at a garbage dump in Nairobi. President Ruto voiced significant concern over these horrific discoveries, calling for a swift investigation. He stressed that those responsible for this "heinous" crime must be held accountable and subjected to the full force of the law.
