SputnikPro Internship Program Launches for African Journalists
At the headquarters of the international news agency and radio Sputnik, a special SputnikPro session has begun for young journalists from sub-Saharan African countries. The program is part of the InteRussia internship initiative of the The Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund and the Rossotrudnichestvo “New Generation” project.
The summer session includes 10 representatives from leading media outlets and organizations across the African continent, including Cameroon’s Ministry of Communication, Observer Media Limited (Uganda), ABP News Agency (Burundi), ZNBC Broadcasting Corporation (Zambia), SONNA National News Agency (Somalia), APS News Agency (Senegal), Kigali Today Ltd (Rwanda), Media4Development (Mozambique), Independent Media (South Africa), and The Star Publications Limited (Kenya).
The program offers foreign journalists the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Russian media agenda, learn from Sputnik’s leading specialists, and exchange expertise with colleagues from different countries. Over the course of a month, participants will attend training sessions, workshops, and partner events.
On the first day, participants shared their impressions and expectations for the intensive professional program.
Cindy Caren Aluoch, a journalist from Kenya’s The Star, said:
“To me, that's like, I was so emotional and I felt so honored and so happy. So to me, this is like a dream come true, something that I really wanted. And I did get it. [...] I'm hoping to learn so much, to see how Sputnik works, how the media house here operates, because I live, breathe, see, talk, eat media. So I'm very happy to be here.”
Khadar Aweis Hassan, Editor of Somalia’s SONNA National News Agency, expects intensive sessions and productive engagement with media peers. He expressed hope that Sputnik and SONNA will establish long-term, mutually beneficial cooperation.
Khadidiatou Mendy, journalist, Senegalese News Agency (Agence de Presse Sénégalaise - APS), noted:
“We got to exchange perspectives regarding cooperation between Russia and Africa, especially when it comes to journalism and communication. [...] As we all can expect to get out of this program – increased experience, a greater agenda, because we get to know each other here and we get to know more colleagues-journalists from Russia. That's the biggest takeaway. And of course, all the experience that we will take back to our countries to better our work, try to integrate all the knowledge we've acquired through this program into our communities, and practice better journalism.”
