Sergey Lavrov Begins His African Tour With Visit to Addis Ababa
The Russian foreign minister arrived in Addis Ababa on Monday evening. During his stay, he is expected to meet with his Ethiopian counterpart Gedion Timothewos, the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, with whom he has already started a meeting.
Main agenda points, according to the Russian press:
Construction of a nuclear power plant in Ethiopia:
One of the main topics of discussion. The two countries had already examined this issue in Moscow at the end of 2025. Ethiopia plans to complete the construction of this plant, carried out in partnership with Russia, in ten years, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Russia, Genet Teshome Jirru, told Sputnik.
Natural resources and mining development:
Ethiopia wants to cooperate with Russian companies in the mining, extractive, and metallurgical sectors, as already announced by Ethiopian officials.
Trade:
During their last meeting last year, Lavrov and Timothewos had discussed trade between the two countries and ways to increase it.
International cooperation and BRICS:
The foreign ministers will also discuss cooperation within various international organizations. Since its accession to BRICS, the ties between the two countries have further strengthened.
Russia-Africa Summit and AU:
Lavrov's talks with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf will mainly focus on the preparations for this summit.
Guided by the principle of "African solutions to African problems," Moscow has repeatedly expressed its willingness to coordinate its efforts with the AU in international forums on urgent issues of the continent.
