Africa Remains One of Fastest-Growing Regions Despite Projected Slowdown to 4.2%: AfDB
Recent performance:
In 2025, the continent grew by 4.4%, driven by:
▪ Higher agricultural output
▪ Better government policies
▪ Favorable commodity prices
What’s next?
The AfDB’s 2026 outlook predicts a rebound to 4.4% in 2027 — but this assumes a short, two-to-three-month Middle East shock. How bad the impact is will depend on supply chain problems and their effect on global energy and fertilizer prices.
East Africa faces challenges:
Growth in East Africa is expected to slow by more than 0.5 percentage points, mainly because of rising energy costs and food insecurity. The AfDB shared this news at its annual meeting in Brazzaville.
A call for more investment:
"Achieving sustained and inclusive growth will require a substantial increase in investment," said AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah.
He emphasized that Africa needs 7%+ annual growth for decades to create enough jobs and reduce poverty.
