‘Africa is for Africans and Their Resources Should Benefit Their People First:’ Zimbabwean Veteran

In an interview with Sputnik Africa, Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association National Secretary General Comrade Sam Parirenyatwa marked Africa Day 2026 by honoring the continent's liberation legacy and issuing a call for self-determination.

"Africa Day, celebrated on May 25 every year, marks the founding of the Organization of African Unity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on May 25, 1963," he recalled, emphasizing the pivotal role of OAU luminaries—Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Kenneth Kaunda, Samora Machel, and Muammar Gaddafi—in supporting Zimbabwe's independence struggle.

He urged Africans not to "lose precious memories of the support the OAU and its membership received from countries such as China, the then Soviet Union, now Russia, and other progressive nations."
