Horn of Africa Remains Vulnerable to Gulf Crisis Despite Tanker Deliveries, Warns IMF

Three vessels carrying 143,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel and gas oil have recently docked in Djibouti, but the IMF warns that Eastern African economies—especially Ethiopia—remain at significant risk due to their reliance on Gulf trade.

Ongoing disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz are causing fuel shortages, rising transport costs, and spoilage of perishable goods, threatening the region's economic stability, the IMF noted.

In addition, disruptions to fertilizer shipments (one‑third passing through the Strait of Hormuz) could drive up food prices, according to the IMF.

The IMF cautions that low‑income countries may need increased external support as food and fertilizer prices climb.
