'Think Global, Act Local': SA Builds Its Next Generation of Inventors and Innovators
14:16 24.03.2026 (Updated: 14:42 24.03.2026) Three young scientists from the Expo team are set to represent South Africa at the Tunisia Technology Festival, showcasing homegrown innovations that solve real community problems, director Parthy Chetty told Sputnik Africa.
"They’ve shown that they have got a skill in them that we are looking for as a country that they are trying to solve problems in the communities," Chetty noted.
He enumerated some of the achievements of the Eskom Expo learners:
Diya Zacaria: Developed an algorithm to maximize learner contact time by reducing time lost moving between classes.
Nathan Moolman: Created an aircraft flap that reduces drag, aiming to lower carbon emissions and help preserve the ozone layer.
Steenkamp: Found the balance between reward and punishment as the most effective way for people to learn.
Learners are identified through workshops and mentorship, then selected projects undergo an upgrade process with industry experts, including from private sector, to meet international standards, as "this is an investment in South Africa," the director explained.
"So our learners are also thinking of how to create technologies that will be used in Africa and will be used by the rest of the world. And this is why the export is so important is because we are creating this platform and we are helping and nurturing this talent for the future," Chetty added.
