Ghana Launches Renewable Energy Project to Boost Rural Electrification

The Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) is aimed at providing clean energy access to over 70,000 people in underserved communities.

The initiative goes beyond infrastructure, focusing on community empowerment and bridging the rural-urban energy gap, Energy Minister John Jinapor emphasized. He praised the patience of off-grid communities and urged local involvement in building, maintaining, and managing the new systems.

Key components of SREP:

🟠Construction of 35 mini grids,

🟠Installation of 1,450 solar home systems in Bono East, Oti, and Savannah regions,

🟠Deployment of 12,000 net-metered rooftop solar PV systems nationwide.

The government envisions:

🟠Universal electricity access by 2030,

🟠Over 200 mini-grids in operation,

🟠Achieving nearly 99.8% electrification.

Feasibility studies have already been completed for 150 island and lakeside communities in Afram Plains.
