South African Foreign Minister Lamola had a meeting with his Russian counterpart Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday. Discussions, described by the South African top diplomat as "productive," centered on the Ukrainian conflict, alongside broader geopolitical issues and multilateral cooperation within BRICS and the G20.
South Africa is looking forward to a negotiated settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, which will lead to a long-lasting peace, Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola told Sputnik Africa, commenting on his Wednesday meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

"The only way there can be peace is when both parties come to the negotiation table," the South African top diplomat said.

Lamola reiterated South Africa's commitment to its peace initiative.

"We are glad to see that the US is now also coming around on this matter," he noted.

South Africa Rejects Gaza Resettlement Plan, Calls for Two-State Solution and End to Violence

The two-state solution, with East Jerusalem as part of the Palestinian capital, aligns with the UN resolution, and South Africa rejects "any plan which is outside" this framework, Lamola pointed out.

"We continue to condemn the unlimited and thoughtless bombing that is happening in Gaza by the IDF in defiance of the four provisional measures, court orders of the ICJ that we have been able to secure," the top diplomat stated.

Pretoria urges Israel to respect the ICJ orders related to South Africa's case against Israel on the prevention and punishment of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the foreign minister said.
"We call on […] the international community to continue to call for Israel to cease and desist, to allow for humanitarian access, to cease the military operations in Gaza and the West Bank," he added.

Reparations for Colonial Crimes are Compensation for 'Ripped Soul of African Continent'

"The debate on reparation is always very important because it can at least compensate for this loss of soul, for this unravelling of the culture of the African continent," Lamola noted.
The reparations can also help African countries to "move forward," the top diplomat said, commenting on this year's AU summit, focused on the relevant issue.
True healing of the wounds of colonialism requires not only reparations but also remorse and concrete actions from former colonial powers, such as investing in Africa's development, the minister emphasized.
"Beneficiate, manufacture and ensure that these partnerships and trade platforms between the African continent or any other countries in the global north and so forth and the global south are mutually beneficial. That is what can restore at least our dignity," he explained.
