The Nigerien authorities released almost 50 people detained after the ouster of the former government in 2023, according to a government statement
read out on national television RTN.
A total of 49 people were released in accordance with President Abdourahamane Tiani's instructions and the recommendations of the national conference held in February,
Among those released are:
president of the PNDS former ruling party Foumakoye Gado;
ex-President Mahamadou Issoufou's son and former Minister of Oil Sani Issoufou Mahamadou;
former Defense Minister Kalla Moutari;
former Finance Minister Jidoud Ahmad;
Nigerien journalist Assoumane Toudou;
Niger's ex-ambassador to Nigeria Alat Mogaskia;
Military officers convicted of plotting a coup against President Mahamadou Issoufou in 2015, sentenced in 2018 to up to 15 years in prison.
Meanwhile, former President Mohamed Bazoum, ousted in 2023, remains in detention.
