Ukraine Will Have to Cede Territory, Abandon NATO Membership, US Professor Believes
NEW YORK (Sputnik), Lenka White - In an interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson last Friday, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that the "largest issue" in the Ukraine conflict was the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions. He also expressed belief that Zelensky had "largely accepted" that Ukraine would not become a NATO member.
Ukraine will have to give up its land and renounce its
NATO membership bid during peace negotiations, Professor of History and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University Peter Kuznick told
RIA Novosti. "Ukraine will have to relinquish territory and forsake NATO membership, however bitter a pill that will be to swallow," Kuznick summarized his thoughts regarding peace talks on Ukraine.
The rest of the issues will be discussed at the "bargaining table," he added.
Furthermore, the best-case scenario is for Volodymyr
Zelensky to escape to one of the Western European countries, as his current role is unsustainable, Kuznick said.
"Zelensky is in an untenable position. His best bet may be to seek safe passage to England, France, or Germany," Kuznick said, commenting on Ukraine peace talks.
US media have reported that the Trump administration has started talking to Zelensky’s rivals, who could challenge him in
elections. Russia has often expressed that it does not view Zelensky as a legitimate president due to canceled elections.
Earlier this month, US journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Seymour Hersh
said that the administration of US President Donald Trump understands that Zelensky will have no role after the conflict in Ukraine is settled.
Zelensky's term expired on May 20, 2024. The 2024 presidential election in Ukraine was canceled due to martial law and general mobilization. Zelensky stated that the elections were now untimely.
