Representatives from Tanzania, the Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, and South Africa will take part in the drills.
The India-Africa Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) is set to take place from April 13 to 18, as
reported by India’s Ministry of Defense on Monday.
Both parties have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation against maritime threats. These include combating piracy, addressing illegal activities such as
human trafficking, and curbing unregulated fishing through improved information sharing and surveillance.
"India and Africa give immense importance to maritime security [...]. A large-scale multilateral maritime engagement exercise with African Countries, titled [...] ‘AIKEYME,’ which means ‘Unity’ in Sanskrit, is an initiative in this direction to enhance interoperability with the navies/maritime agencies," the statement read.
The drills will be conducted in
two phases. The harbor phase will include command post exercises focused on anti-piracy operations and information sharing, along with training in seamanship, boarding, search, and seizure operations. The sea phase will involve improving navigation skills, search-and-rescue operations, small arms firing, and
helicopter operations.
The joint activities will be hosted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and are scheduled to span six days.
