Namibia's New President Appoints Vice President, Approves Cabinet Composition

General elections were held in Namibia on 27 November last year to elect the president and members of the National Assembly. According to the electoral commission, the candidate of the ruling South West African People's Organization (SWAPO) party, Vice President Nandi-Ndaitwah, won, becoming the first female president in the country's history.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Namibia's first female leader, has appointed Lucia Witbooi as her vice president and approved the new composition of the country's government, including Elijah Ngurare as prime minister.
Other members of the cabinet include:
Natangwe Ithete as deputy prime minister and minister of mines and energy;
Erica Shafudah as minister of finance; and
Selma Ashipala-Musavyi as minister of international relations;
Lucia Iipumbu as minister of home affairs;
Esperance Luvindao as minister of health and social services;
Indileni Daniel as minister of the environment;
Sanet Steenkamp as minister of education;
Albert Hengari as minister of agriculture, water and land reform;
Veikko Nekundi as minister of works transport;
Fillemon Wise Immanuel as justice minister;
James Sankwasa as minister of urban and rural development;
Emma Katema as minister of gender equality;
Emma Teofelus remains the minister of information and communication technology;
Frans Kapofi retained his position as minister of defense.
In addition, in the new government announced by the president at State House in Windhoek on Saturday, Festus Mbandeka retained his position as the attorney general, while Kaire Mbeunde was appointed as the head of the National Planning Commission.
