African cuisine is integral to the continent's diverse cultures, reflecting its history and the lives of its people. Each African region has its own unique culinary traditions, which have been influenced by the availability of local ingredients, the legacy of colonialism, and the patterns of trade.
Four African cities ranked among the world's top 20 food destinations in Time Out's 2025 ranking, which assessed cities based on quality, affordability, and other attributes. Each city was evaluated across 18 criteria, with only one city per country included to showcase the best of global cuisine.
Cape Town, South Africa: The city has been named the best food destination in the world this year, primarily due to its outstanding food and drink scene. Boasting a 95% approval rating for its dining experiences, tying with Paris, Capetonians are highly enthusiastic and describe their food as "delicious."
Lagos, Nigeria: The Nigerian city is recognized as one of the most affordable cities for food and drink, with most locals finding it budget-friendly. Lagosians describe their food scene as "delicious," as well as "healthy," "traditional," and "convenient."
Marrakech, Morocco: This food destination is considered highly affordable for food and drink, ranking third overall. Locals describe its cuisine as "traditional," "diverse," and "delicious," making it a prime destination to experience Morocco's rich culinary heritage.
Cairo, Egypt: Cairo's food scene received high praise from 90% of locals, who frequently described it as "diverse." While restaurant dining wasn't considered the most affordable, drinks were generally budget-friendly.
