The African Union has adopted a ten-year strategy to transform Africa’s agri-food systems, aiming to increase food production, reduce post-harvest losses, and boost intra-African trade. Leaders emphasized value addition, trade barriers, and climate resilience as key to achieving food security by 2035.
The African Union’s Kampala Declaration aims to transform Africa’s agri-food systems by 2035. Professor Wole Fatunbi, Acting Director of Research and Innovation at Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, emphasized that this strategy is built on lessons learned from past efforts, ensuring that Africa moves beyond fragmented policies and towards a cohesive, resilient, and sustainable food system.
He stressed the importance of investment in infrastructure, harmonized policies, and intentional coordination among African nations to drive implementation. He also highlighted the need to look beyond agriculture and focus on the entire food system, ensuring that inefficiencies are addressed.

“We now want a sustainable, resilient agri-food system for a healthy and prosperous Africa. This document shows that we want to build on existing successes, and the focus is to have an equitable engagement that harmonizes every lesson we’ve learned and implements them. One thing I want to bring to the fore is the need to look not only at agriculture but also at the food system component, and that gives us the opportunity to close all the loose ends that have prevented Africa from achieving its goal in the last 20 years,” Professor Fatunbi explained.
