Record $21.8Bln Needed to Repair All Roads in England, Wales, Industrial Association Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A total of 17% of all roads in England and Wales are in such poor condition that they have a service life of less than five years, the UK Asphalt Industry Alliance pointed out.
The UK government will need a record 16.81 billion pounds ($21.8 billion) to repair all roads in England and Wales and bring them into proper condition, which will take 12 years, the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) said in its
annual report on Wednesday.
"The combined estimate for this one-time ‘catch-up’ cost – over and above what local authorities indicate they already receive – for England and Wales (including London) is now 16.81 billion pounds. This is the highest reported in ALARM and continues the upward trajectory reported […] Highway departments estimated that it would take 12 years to get local roads back to their ‘ideal’ conditions, if adequate funding and resources were in place," the report read.
Meanwhile, motorists in the UK reportedly spent in 2024 a record 579 million pounds ($751 million) on repairs after they hit potholes.
