UK Deputy Home Secretary Angela Eagle said that the government intends to close nine hotels used to accommodate asylum seekers by the end of March. She added that the government intends to reduce the use of hotels by reforming the asylum system and creating a border security command to combat gangs involved in the smuggling of people. Last autumn, Eagle said that 220 hotels were used to accommodate asylum seekers. In November, she said that since the July general elections, an additional 14 hotels had been used for these purposes, while seven had been closed.

UK Gov't Planning to Reduce Number of Asylum Hotels by End of March, Official Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In October 2024, the UK National Audit Office said that the Home Office spent £4.7 billion ($5.75 billion) on supporting asylum seekers in the 2023-24 financial year, including £3 billion ($3.67 billion) on hotel accommodation.
UK Deputy Home Secretary Angela Eagle said that the government intends to close nine hotels used to accommodate
asylum seekers by the end of March.
"Nine more hotels are scheduled to close by the end of March, and there has been a net increase of six, so by the end of March there will be fewer," Eagle told the parliament on Monday.
She added that the government intends to reduce the use of hotels by reforming the asylum system and creating a
border security command to combat gangs involved in the smuggling of people.
Last autumn, Eagle said that 220 hotels were used to accommodate asylum seekers. In November, she said that since the July general elections, an additional 14 hotels had been used for these purposes, while seven had been closed.
