Two Earthquakes With Magnitude of Up to 5.5 Hit Ethiopia in Last 24 Hours

In February, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit central Ethiopia. The quake took place near Oromiya, the country's largest region with a population of nearly half a million, according to the US Geological Survey. Being relatively shallow, at a depth of only 10 km, it likely intensified its effects on the surface.
A powerful magnitude 5.5
earthquake occurred 46 km from the town of Awash at 9:53 pm local time on Sunday, with a depth of 10 km, as reported by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
Shortly after, at 12:20 am local time, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake was recorded 52 km from Abomsa, a town in central
Ethiopia, also at a depth of 10 km.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage from either event.
These earthquakes are part of an ongoing series triggered by heightened seismic and volcanic activity in the
Oromia and Afar regions. This situation has already led to the evacuation of thousands of people due to infrastructure damage and the looming threat of a volcanic eruption.
