The race, captured by Sputnik Africa's correspondent, was held in the Bole district of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa as part of International Women's Day celebrations, and honored the country's legendary female athletes who have inspired generations.
The 22nd edition of the Women First Five km Race took place in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, on Sunday, attracting over 16,000 participants, with around 150 athletes, including more than 30 women recognized for their
achievements, taking part in the race.
This year's race is themed "Running for Every Woman, Every Right," said Great Ethiopian Run, the company which organized the event, adding that the theme is "a powerful reminder that the fight for gender equality is far from over."
"As thousands of runners take to the streets, they aren't just racing toward a finish line; they're running toward a future where every woman and girl has the rights, opportunities, and dignity they deserve," the organizers emphasized.
Ethiopia's double Olympic gold medalist Meseret Defar, the event's ambassador, officially kicked off the race. Moreover, all those who cross the finish line in less than 35 minutes are expected to receive a certificate signed by the
athlete.
