El Salvador has received the first planes carrying more than 230 members of a Venezuelan criminal group deported from the United States, Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele said on Sunday. Twenty-three members of the MS-13 criminal group arrested in the US and wanted by Salvadoran justice were also on board the planes, the president added. In February, Bukele said that El Salvador had offered the US to use its mega-prison to hold convicted criminals, including American citizens, in exchange for a fee, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the US would consider the offer. The CECOT, a 40,000-inmate maximum security prison, opened in El Salvador in February 2023, after the government declared a state of emergency to combat gang violence.

El Salvador Receives First Batch of Venezuelan Criminals Deported From US, President Says
10:19 17.03.2025 (Updated: 11:07 18.03.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Earlier this year, media reported that the US administration was planning to send about 300 Venezuelan criminals to El Salvador for a custody term of one year until Washington decided what to do with them.
El Salvador has received the first planes carrying more than 230 members of a Venezuelan criminal group deported from the United States, Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele said on Sunday.
"Today, the first 238 members of the Venezuelan criminal organization, Tren de Aragua, arrived in our country. They were immediately transferred to CECOT, the Terrorism Confinement Center, for a period of one year (renewable)," Bukele said on X.
Twenty-three members of the MS-13 criminal group arrested in the US and wanted by Salvadoran justice were also on board the planes, the president added.
In February,
Bukele said that El Salvador had offered the US to use its mega-prison to hold convicted criminals, including American citizens, in exchange for a fee, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the US would consider the offer.
The CECOT, a 40,000-inmate maximum security prison, opened in El Salvador in February 2023, after the government declared a state of emergency to combat gang violence.
