WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Rubio is currently on a tour of Latin American countries. Before El Salvador, he visited Panama, following which President Jose Raul Mulino said he would not extend the memorandum of understanding with China on the Belt and Road Initiative. After El Salvador, Rubio will visit Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that El Salvador President Nayib Bukele had offered to accept imprisoned criminals from the United States, including those who were in the country legally.

"He has offered to house in his jails dangerous American criminals in custody in our country, including those with US citizenship and legal residency," a Western news agency quoted Rubio as saying after talks with the Salvadoran leader.

Earlier, Bukele told reporters that the governments of the two countries were finalizing work on an "unprecedented" agreement to combat the migration crisis. The president noted that the future deal "has no precedent" in the history of relations not only between the United States and El Salvador, but also with other Latin American countries.
