While the latest operation is part of a wider effort to combat organized crime and drug trafficking in Algeria, between March 5 and 11, the army arrested 50 drug traffickers, seized 905 kilos of cannabis, and confiscated 2,954,228 hallucinogenic tablets during cross-border smuggling attempts from Morocco, the Defense Ministry noted earlier.
The Algerian People's National Army foiled an attempt to smuggle 2.5 tonnes of cannabis from Morocco, the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement, adding that an off-road vehicle used for cannabis smuggling was also seized.
"As part of the fight against organized crime and in continuation of the tireless efforts to combat the evil of drug trafficking in our country, on Friday, joint detachments of the People's National Army, in coordination with the various security services, foiled, in an operation in the territory of the third military region [southwestern Algeria], an attempt to import a significant amount of drugs through our border with Morocco, which allowed the seizure of 25 quintals and 10 kilograms of processed cannabis, as well as an off-road vehicle," read the statement issued on Saturday.
Moreover,
225 drug traffickers were arrested in February, with
3.22 tonnes of cannabis, 78.83 kilograms of cocaine, and 2,670,543 hallucinogenic pills confiscated, according to the ministry.
