Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently raided major drug markets in the country, seizing 87 truckloads of banned, expired, and substandard medical products, including donated items from USAID and UNFPA, Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye said. The raids, intended to combat counterfeit drugs and protect public health, revealed expired HIV/AIDS medications donated by USAID and UNFPA which were being repackaged for resale.Furthermore, the raids uncovered large quantities of controlled drugs, including the recently banned TAFRADOL and other narcotics. Adeyeye warned that the sheer volume of seized narcotics could destabilize national security. NAFDAC and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria will relocate drug markets to Coordinated Wholesale Centers nationwide within a year to combat systemic issues.
