Earlier, on Wednesday, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was taken into custody upon his arrival in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where he will appear before the ICC regarding his actions during the drug crackdown in his country, the ICC reported. The court had issued an arrest warrant for him for alleged crimes during his war on drugs.
When it comes to African leaders, the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC) are easily applied, Ahmat Mahamat Hassan, former Minister of Justice of Chad, explained to Sputnik Africa.
However, when it comes to major powers, "it becomes a matter of power relations," where the issue of state sovereignty is used as a shield to block the court's decisions. He noted that the credibility of the court has been undermined for several years now.
"But the problem goes deeper," the former minister added, suggesting that the international community should consider a mechanism to protect humanity from the behavior of leaders.
"At first, we thought it was Africans who were the weakest members of the human family, but no, it concerns everyone," Hassan emphasized.

He added that the United States, a major power with significant economic, political, and military influence, was not a party to the Treaty of Rome, which poses a problem.
