The contest is an annual competition organized by the Russian Rossiya Segodnya media group (which includes Sputnik) in memory of its photojournalist Andrei Stenin, who was killed on duty in the Donbass in 2014.
The Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest roadshow has opened its exhibitions in Pretoria and Cape Town.
In Pretoria, 45 winning works from the contest's tenth anniversary season are on display at the Fairtree Atterbury Theatre, supported by the Russian Embassy. The exhibition includes "Fire," a Top News prize-winner from South Africa. Pretoria first hosted the Stenin Prize winners in 2020.
Cape Town is hosting the exhibition for the fifth time, showcasing 40 winning images at the Good Hope Gallery in the Castle of Good Hope. This exhibition is supported by Independent Media South Africa, African News Agency, and the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Cape Town. The Cape Town exhibition is open to the public until March 16.
The photographs in both cities represent work from photographers across the globe, including Russia, Bangladesh, India, Spain, Italy, China, Myanmar, South Africa, and Syria.

"South Africa is the record holder for the number of exhibitions as part of the competition roadshow outside of Russia," the Russian Ambassador to South Africa, Roman Ambarov, noted during the opening ceremony in Pretoria.

Iqbal Survé, Executive Chairman of Independent Media South Africa, stated it was an honor to collaborate with Sputnik on the Andrei Stenin Photo Exhibition. He emphasized the exhibition's significance in highlighting the courage of young photojournalists.

"The 40 selected images on display not only accurately captured the beauty, complexity, and diversity of the human experience in the world," Ian Landsberg, photo director of ANA news agency, said.

The Stenin contest winners' works were first exhibited in Cape Town in 2016, Landsberg noted, describing the current exhibition at the Castle of Good Hope as a must-see collection of outstanding photographs.
