Africa's population is growing at a rate of 2.3% per year, outpacing the global average of 1.6%. This growth, coupled with a rise in grain consumption, is fueling long-term demand, a consultant at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization Liaison Office in Russia has earlier said.
Agricultural exports from Russia to African countries increased by 19% in 2024, surpassing $7 billion, according to the federal center Agroexport.
"Experts estimate that Russian agricultural exports to Africa in 2024 exceeded $7 billion, marking a 19% increase compared to 2023. Domestic food products were supplied to 45 countries on the continent," the statement said.
It was also reported that
Egypt remains the largest importer of Russian agricultural products. By the end of 2024, Russian agricultural exports to Egypt grew by 21% in monetary terms.
"Egypt is a leading importer of Russian wheat. The country also imports sunflower and soybean oil, legumes, flax seeds, molasses, yeast, and various other goods," Agroexport reported.
Besides Egypt, the top five importers of Russian food in Africa include Algeria, Libya,
Kenya, and Tunisia.
The federal center also noted that the backbone of Russian agricultural exports to Africa is grains—wheat, barley, and corn—which collectively accounted for 87% of the total value of food supplies to the continent. Additionally, African countries are significant buyers of oils and fats, meat, and
fish. In 2024, dairy product shipments also increased significantly.
Igor Pavensky, head of agricultural market analysis at "Rusagrotrans," noted that Africa is increasing its share in Russian wheat exports.
"In the 2023/2024 season, 21.2 million tonnes of wheat were exported to African countries, accounting for 38% of Russia's total wheat exports, setting a record high," he emphasized.
Meanwhile, in the current season, African countries already represent more than 50% of Russia's wheat exports.
