Syrian Observatory For Human Rights Accuses New Authorities of Killing 340 People
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On Friday, the Syrian authorities imposed a curfew in Latakia and Tartus provinces, where clashes erupted on Thursday between the government forces and rebels loyal to ex-president Assad. Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa called on the armed groups to disarm, while the Defense Ministry closed roads to the coastal region.
UK-based Syrian Observatory For Human Rights (SOHR) on Saturday accused Syria’s
new authorities of conducting military operations that resulted in the deaths of around 340 people, including women and children.
"The ministry of defense and its allied forces have committed war crimes and human rights violations with impunity, resulting in the death of 340 citizens," SOHR said, adding that women and children were among the dead.
Eyewitnesses from a village in the area of the hostilities, which broke out on Thursday in the Latakia and Tartus provinces, told Sputnik that foreign fighters had entered their settlement.
"I don’t know where they came from, but they weren’t speaking Arabic. They fired chaotically at houses and captured any men who couldn’t escape. We’ve been too afraid to leave our homes for days, and we are running out of food and water," one eyewitness said.
Other witnesses in Latakia described continuous street shootings and arrests over several days.
"Armed militants are raiding shops and taking whatever they want. We learned from the Internet that a lot of people had gathered at the Latakia International Airport in Hmeimim, but it is now too dangerous to go there – you risk arrest or even death," another resident said.
At the end of November, Syria's armed opposition launched a large-scale
offensive on areas controlled by government forces. Bashar Assad stepped down as Syrian president and left the country.
