Rwanda Condemns Canada's Stance on DRC Conflict as 'Shameful'

Since January, the M23 rebels have captured significant territories in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, including the cities of Goma and Bukavu. The DRC authorities accuse Rwanda of supporting the M23, a charge Kigali denies.
Rwanda denounced Canada's stance on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) conflict as "shameful," adding that Ottawa's measures against Kigali wouldn't resolve the issue.
Canada suspended export permits, government-to-government business and trade missions, and support for private sector business development activities with Rwanda. They will also review participation in international events hosted by Rwanda.
These actions follow similar moves by the European Union and the United Kingdom to suspend bilateral aid to Rwanda. The US also sanctioned James Kabarebe, a Rwandan state minister for foreign affairs.

Although Rwanda denies military support for the M23 group, the DRC accuses Rwanda of violating its sovereignty and territorial integrity by sending troops to support armed groups. In turn, Rwanda alleges that the DRC supports the FDLR, a group associated with the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
