The committee, chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji, includes representatives from state governments, the Association of Boat Operators in Nigeria, marine safety experts, and academics. Deputy Director of Inland Waterways at the Ministry, Adams Offie, will serve as Secretary.
In a bid to enhance safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has
inaugurated a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, Oyetola stressed the urgent need to curb the rising number of
boat accidents, which have led to significant loss of lives and property. He described Nigeria’s waterways as essential to commerce, transportation, and livelihoods, emphasizing that ensuring their safety is paramount to the success of the country’s blue economy.
Oyetola acknowledged that tackling boat mishaps is a "daunting" task but expressed confidence that with
collective commitment, accidents can be minimized, making the waterways safer and more efficient.
The newly formed body is tasked with conducting an in-depth review of commercial boat operations, identifying the root causes of boat mishaps, and proposing sustainable solutions. NIWA MD Oyebamiji assured the minister of the committee’s dedication to delivering on its mandate.
“Safety on our inland waterways is non-negotiable. NIWA has been refocused to ensure the highest safety standards, and this committee will work diligently to address the causes of boat mishaps and find lasting solutions,” Oyebamiji was quoted as saying.
