On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that it is initiating its inaugural Ebola virus vaccine trial in Uganda. According to the WHO, if the vaccine proves effective, it could play a significant role in stopping the current outbreak and safeguarding at-risk populations in the future.
Ugandan health authorities reported a second Ebola-related fatality in Kampala on Saturday, just days after declaring that all previously hospitalized patients had successfully recovered and been discharged.
"Following the outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease on Jan. 30, 2025, the Ministry of Health would like to update the general public about an additional positive case in Mulago, a resident of Kibuli linked to the primary cluster. The identified case is a four-and-a-half-year-old child who presented with and died from classical symptoms of Ebola at Mulago Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025," the statement read.
Health officials have so far confirmed a total of 10 cases in the country.
The ministry highlighted that on February 18 and 19, eight individuals who had battled Ebola were discharged after making a full recovery and have since been reintegrated into their communities.
To
curb further spread, authorities continue to implement stringent measures, including active surveillance in health facilities, contact tracing, exit screening for travelers, and vaccination efforts targeting those exposed to the virus.
Officials reassured citizens and international visitors that the situation remains under control, stating that Uganda is "safe for trade, travel, and
tourism."The Ebola outbreak was officially declared on January 30 after a 32-year-old nurse in Kampala succumbed to the disease.
