WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - According to the US Census Bureau, more than 78% of Americans speak only English at home, but millions use Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog and other languages. Spanish is the first language for more than 10% of the US population.
US President Donald Trump signed an order recognizing English as the official language in the United States.
"This order designates English as the official language of the United States," the document distributed by the White House press service says.
The order states that the purpose of its signing is to promote unity and a common American culture among US citizens.
Previously, no language was recognized as an official language in the United States.
