Themed "Victory of Black People," the 129th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa commemorates Ethiopia's historic defeat of Italy in 1896, symbolizing resistance against colonialism, and is widely celebrated across the East African country and in its embassies around the world.
Ethiopia on Sunday marks the 129th anniversary of the historic
Victory of Adwa in 1896 during the First Italo-Ethiopian War. The triumph is honored for the lessons of heroism, solidarity and unity that inspired African peoples around the world to resist oppression.
While launching an official celebration ceremony at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian President
Taye Atske Selassie praised the nation's resilient governance and its role in inspiring global freedom movements, emphasizing Adwa's significance as a connection to Africa and the world.
"Adwa is a testament to our determination. […] United, our people repelled imperialism, earning a distinguished place for our nation, our freedom, and our independence—a source of deep pride for me," Taye stated, describing the victory as an "unbreakable historical necklace," which is a unifying legacy that links Ethiopia's past and future.
The Ethiopian top official laid a wreath at the statue of Emperor Menelik II in honor of the victory before the celebrations began at the museum.
The African Union Commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat, ambassadors of various countries, representatives of international organizations, and members of the Ethiopian Defense Forces are among other invited guests who are attending the celebration.
Historically, Ethiopians have demonstrated patience and dedication to avoiding conflict, understanding the horrors of war. However, when faced with aggression, they fought to defend their peace, freedom, and
sovereignty, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a message on the occasion.
"We are the children of the Adwa warriors. We prioritize peace. We know that our enemies have not abandoned their miscalculations. We have learned from the Adwa campaigners to accept those who come peacefully and to punish those who do not," the message read.
Nowadays, Ethiopians remain committed to peace while staying prepared to defend it. Drawing inspiration from their ancestors' example, the nation prioritizes peaceful coexistence but is resolute in confronting those who threaten it, embodying the spirit of the Adwa campaigners, Abiy emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy in Addis Ababa congratulated the Ethiopian people on the occasion of the victory anniversary and wished them "prosperity, realization of all the plans, and success."
