Last October, the UK agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, retaining control of the Diego Garcia military base under a 99-year lease. Although backed by the former US president, the deal's future became uncertain after Trump's re-election. Ramgoolam, who took office last November, also raised concerns about its status.
Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has expressed optimism over recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, suggesting that Washington is likely to support an agreement concerning the future of a US-UK military base in the Chagos Islands.

"It looks positive. But we will wait and see what the final proposals are," Ramgoolam told the weekly newspaper L’Hebdo on Sunday in response to Trump's comments.

During a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House on Thursday, Trump signaled his likely approval of the arrangement.
Trump stated that he would discuss the agreement with Starmer but expressed confidence that a resolution would be reached.
"I think we'll be inclined to go along with your country," he told the UK leader.
The UK government had previously indicated that it would allow the Trump administration to review the agreement before finalizing it with a formal treaty.
