GENEVA (Sputnik) - After mediation efforts by Angola failed, M23 rebels resumed their offensive in eastern DRC. The DRC accuses Rwanda of aiding the rebels, a claim Rwanda denies. In late January, M23 seized Goma, the largest city in eastern DRC, and later took control of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province.
There is a possibility that Rwanda is thinking about organizing a coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but the government and the population are ready to resist, DRC Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka told Sputnik.
"Perhaps in this hegemonic madness they would like to go as far as this [coup in the DRC], but we are ready … I think that the entire population is with us, because they understand exactly what is happening … What is actually happening is that a neighboring country is violating the territorial integrity of the country in order to gain access to its mineral resources and especially to strategic minerals," the prime minister said.
Furthermore, the DRC is not ready for any territorial concessions to resolve the conflict in the east of the country with Rwanda.
"It is completely unacceptable for the Democratic Republic of Congo to make territorial concessions to resolve the conflict. We rely on the integrity of our territory and our sovereignty," she said.
The republic also calls on UN member states to impose sanctions on Rwanda in accordance with the resolution adopted by the UN Security Council, the PM added.
Last week, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution that ordered the M23 rebels to cease hostilities in the DRC and withdraw their units from the country. The UN Security Council also focused on Rwanda's support for the rebel forces and called on "Rwanda Defense Forces to cease support to the M23 and immediately withdraw from DRC territory without preconditions."
"I think that from the moment we approached them [the UN Security Council], we can believe in it [action by the UN Security Council], but it took a long time before we got this resolution that finally mentioned Rwanda directly … Today, it is important that all UN member states individually support this resolution through sanctions that each of them can impose to force the aggressor country to leave the DRC," the prime minister said.
