WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The resolution adopted by the UN Security Council on the DRC conflict also demanded that all parties facilitate the timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to populations in need. To that end, it called on all parties to urgently open temporary humanitarian corridors in North and South Kivu.
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Friday calling on Rwanda to withdraw from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
All 15 council members supported the resolution.
The resolution "calls on Rwanda Defense Forces to cease support to the M23 and immediately withdraw from DRC territory without preconditions."
The resolution also urges the DRC and Rwanda to return without preconditions to diplomatic talks. The document also strongly condemned the ongoing offensive and advances of M23 in the DRC.
The resolution was submitted by France, whose ambassador Nicolas de Riviere emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict.

"This delivers a clear message: there is no military solution to the conflict in the east of the DRC. The offensive carried out by the M23 supported by Rwanda must be put to an end," de Riviere stated.

Russian ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said the resolution was adopted after significant diplomatic efforts in the UN and during the summits of African leaders.

"This needs to be fulfilled by all parties without delay. Hostilities must cease. Lives must be saved. The civilian population must return to their homes," Nebenzia said.

The confrontation between the M23 rebel movement and the government in Kinshasa has continued for years, interrupted by brief periods of truce mediated by Angola. The DRC government accuses neighboring Rwanda of supporting the rebels and urges it to withdraw its troops from the country. Rwanda has rejected all accusations. In late January, the M23 rebels captured Goma, the capital of the eastern DRC province of North Kivu. Last week, they entered Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu.
