On Thursday, the US announced sanctions on Rwanda’s Minister of State for Regional Integration, James Kabarebe, for allegedly supporting the M23 rebel group in the DRC. Rwanda condemned the decision as “unjustified and unfounded,” arguing that such measures won't resolve the longstanding conflict.
Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has called on the United States to directly purchase strategic raw materials from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasizing it as the "true owner" of these resources. He accused Rwanda of seizing these materials through violence against Congo's people.
Tshisekedi made this offer primarily to the US, highlighting that "what had been hidden and maintained for 30 years has just been revealed by the Trump administration," as stated by presidential spokesperson Tina Salama on X on Sunday.
She further mentioned that this offer is also available to European countries and other purchasers currently obtaining materials from Rwanda, cautioning that “sourcing conflict minerals from Rwanda will become increasingly compromising and complicated.”
