Russia Supports AES by Sending Military Specialists, Equipment, Foreign Ministry Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In July 2024, at a summit in Niamey, the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger signed a treaty establishing a tripartite confederation. The treaty outlines areas of coordination between the three countries, as well as their intention to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States.
Russia supports the Alliance of Sahel States
(AES) by sending military specialists and equipment to its countries, the Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for Partnership with Africa, Tatiana Dovgalenko, told
Sputnik.
"Russia, for its part, assists both in strengthening counter-terrorism capabilities and improving the combat effectiveness of national armed forces by sending military specialists and equipment, training military and law enforcement personnel, as well as in the social and economic development of the countries of the region," Dovgalenko said, commenting on the creation of the alliance.
The creation of such a community is an important step in consolidating the efforts of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to ensure their national security and social and economic goals, she said.
"Based on the 'African problems—African solutions' fundamental principle, we believe that this initiative fully meets the interests of the peoples of these states and will have a positive impact on the establishment of a new regional security architecture," the department director added.
The three states have already achieved some success and are gradually regaining control over their territories, Dovgalenko said, adding that they have also almost completed the creation of an approximately 5,000-strong
AES military.
